Switching Manjaro branches (stable → testing → unstable)

manjaro 26 / published / guide #7 / ≈ 2 min read

Manjaro runs on three software branches, named for how recent the packages are:

  • stable — slowest, most tested. The default.
  • testing — a week or two ahead of stable.
  • unstable — basically Arch itself, freshest packages.

You can switch between them, but the move involves real upgrades or downgrades, so it's worth understanding the trade-offs first.

Should you switch?

For most people: no. Stable is updated often enough and breaks rarely. Switch to testing if a fix you need has already landed upstream and you don't want to wait two weeks for it. Switch to unstable only if you're tracking an Arch bug or contributing patches.

Step 1: Check which branch you're on

pacman-mirrors -G

Prints stable, testing, or unstable.

Step 2: Switch

To go from stable to testing:

sudo pacman-mirrors --api --set-branch testing
sudo pacman -Syyu

The -yy forces a fresh download of the package list (important — without it, pacman would still be looking at the stable list).

The full -Syyu upgrade can install hundreds of packages the first time. Take a snapshot first (see the Timeshift section in the "first hour" guide).

Step 3: Going back is harder

Going stable → testing is an upgrade. Going testing → stable means installing older versions of things, and pacman is wary of that.

The clean way is to roll back to a snapshot from before you switched. Boot into Timeshift and restore.

If you're feeling brave and have no snapshot, switch the branch back and run:

sudo pacman -Syyuu

Note the two us — that authorises downgrades. Read the output carefully; you'll get prompted about every package that goes backwards.

Common pitfall: the keyring

After switching, sometimes pacman complains about expired signing keys. Refresh them:

sudo pacman -S archlinux-keyring manjaro-keyring

Then retry your upgrade.

Summary

Switching branches is a powerful trick to know but not something you need every week. Most users stay on stable forever and never miss anything. If you do switch, take a snapshot first and don't panic if you have to roll back.
